National Strategy & Growth Advisor, BDO
Gary is the national strategy & growth advisor for BDO USA’s national office and also serves clients out of BDO’s Cleveland office. With more than 35 years of accounting and consulting experience, Gary consults on general business, financing, service programs, and growth strategy, and has extensive experience in tax and strategic planning. Gary also serves as an adviser to national and international firms in the accounting industry on practice management issues. He provided SEC testimony on Sarbanes-Oxley.
A frequent contributor to national accounting publications, Gary has had more than 100 articles published in the last decade, five of them in the Journal of Accountancy. He currently serves on the editorial board of CPA Practice Management Forum and has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Accountancy, Managing Partner Report, Practicing CPA, and the Ohio CPA Journal. He is the co-author of two books – How to Manage Your Accounting Practice: Taking Your Firm from Chaos to Consensus and the most recent, Stratagem.
Gary received the inaugural Champion Award from the Cleveland Area Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association for his long-standing commitment and dedication to the organization. He was honored by Hillel at Kent State and North Coast Community Homes for his leadership. He and his business partner, Mark Goldfarb, received the 2008 E&Y Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Gary has been named 12 times to Accounting Today’s list of the Top 100 Most Influential People in Accounting, and was named to the magazine’s inaugural list of Managing Partner Elite in 2012, where he was described as the “very model of the modern managing partner.” Accounting Today also wrote that the list was more or less unimaginable without Gary, and that he “invented, codified or popularized most of the strategies and best practices that are now taken for granted.” In 2012, he was also named a CPA Practice Advisor’s Top 25 Thought Leader by Public Accounting Technology.
Gary was also named a 2013 Most Admired Peer by INSIDE Public Accounting, one of only five accounting profession leaders named by their colleagues.
Committed to giving back to the community in which he lives, Gary has been involved in a number of civic organizations. He previously served on the boards of Northeast Ohio Medical University, Global Cleveland, Jewish Community Federation, Better Business Bureau, Montefiore Home, Cleveland Museum of Art, Anti-Defamation League, and the National Center on Nonprofit Enterprise, and is a former chairman of North Coast Community Homes, Inc., Hillel at Kent State University, and Cleveland Jewish News.
